Women Status in South Asia
By Saadeqa Khan
“You can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the
status of its women”. (Jawaharlal Nehru)
Although the Study of women rights and standards caught the
attention of historian in late Centuries, yet men got superiority over
women since the extinction of human being. It is inhuman to humiliate
her due to the fact that she is one of the strongest and most respectable
creatures of God.
The East Asian history from Mughal Emperors to Indo-Pak
independence movement has filled up with exploitations of conquerors but
the historians never enlightened the empowerment and great contribution of
womenfolk behind the conquest.
In South Asia, gender issue is rather controversial and
represents a complex challenge, there has been a greater recognition of
problems across the region, women usually lack their living rights, almost
30% of women die during their childbirth due to lack of
sufficient maternity facilities, the majority of them has suffered healthy
food shortage as well as Vitamins shortage during their pregnancy,
However, UN’s world health program has a great contribution in providing
maternity facilities in villages and towns of faraway districts, but even
when the death toll of women during their pregnancy is extreme in most of
the countries Such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
The low Literacy rate of womenfolk is another motive of their
ignorance in all fields of life, in many areas women status is still
compared with that of slaves, they are tied to home for children
nourishment, This situation is worst in most of the societies of India, where
lineage, caste, and religious values expostulate superior to human rights,
here women are burnt with her husband’s “Chita” (pyre) And the birth of
daughters considered unfavorable.
However, in Islamic countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, and
Indonesia women do not only carry out the burden Of symbolizing the honor
of family but often seen in embodying the National honor as well. True
equality is not the great superiority of women but also assigns the equal
gender status, to gather with a great contribution, commitment, and faith
they accomplish the necessities of each other and make a place to live in.
Trends have been changing nowadays in this region and women
have experienced the improved access to services, “However, despite the
recent economic growth and changing social norms, dramatic Gender
inequalities persist in south Asia. addressing these inequalities will
require the great voice of women in political decision-making of
communities as well as states. These can be done away with only by
establishing a new society, where men and women will enjoy equal rights,
resulting from an upheaval in the means of production and in the social
relationship as well”. Women should provide equivalent legal and social
rights and opportunities on the moderate basis.
Womenfolk require replenish awareness to the status they
deserve in society, women empowerment is considered to be the best way to
develop the nations, and it is so effective that it is second to be none.
When status and power of women will be greater in third world countries,
we will able to change the power structure of our world and can
expand opportunities to all. A higher standard of living for women ensures
better governance and a healthier and more prosperous future for the
children and a better future for the nation. There is an urgent need for
empowering women especially in rural areas, rural women play a vital role
in farm and home system. “She contributes substantially in the physical aspect
of farming, livestock management, Post-harvest and allied activities. Her
direct and indirect contribution to the farm and home level along with
Livestock management operation has not only help to save their assets but
also led to increasing the family income”.
Women of substance are one who walks in Purpose does not have
to check people or opportunities, her light causes them to pursue her. I
hope full that South Asian women will soon be recognized for their
excellent abilities to serving the nations, women should get up they
technically to cope with the changing times and productively using their
free time and existing skills for setting and sustaining enterprises.
